But have you ever experienced ‘site-being’? We at Site-Being Tours specialise in alternative sensory tours of Melbourne’s favourite places. Our inaugural tour will kick off at Queen Victoria Markets! We will guide you to tune into the smells, sounds or textures as you weave your way through this popular destination. At the end of the tour, you would have a chance to take home or send someone a souvenir of your very unique experience. Come with us to enrich your memory bank! Site Being Tours is a public art project that plays with how we engage with places of tourist interest. The project adopts the visual language of ‘guided tours’ and the performative aspects of being a tourist, including ‘exploring’ and memorialising with souvenirs.&nbsp;&nbsp; Sightseeing tours are designed to offer visitors a prescriptive and specific way of engaging with a point of interest or a destination. It is often a simple and easy way to get a sense of that place. What tourism does well is package revised histories and a sense of a place to make them palatable for consumption. There’s an emphasis on engaging with places visually. As a result, a visitor is very quickly conditioned to see places on a reductive and somewhat superficial level. This fleeting engagement may often result in quick selfies or photos of ‘iconic’ spots and the purchase of a souvenir in the form of a postcard or a cheap, disconnected imitation of a generic ‘cultural’ symbol.&nbsp; Site Being Tours asks people to tune away from the visual and re-focus on the sense of smell, sound or texture. The project incorporated ideas of mindfulness and the situationist practice of ‘dérive’ (drifting) as a way of drawing participants’ attention to the present moment and experience. I played the role of the non-expert tour guide who guided groups through the QVM. There was no set route. the only instructions provided were through one of three postcards that participants selected that chose which sense they were to focus on the tour. Before starting the tour, we closed our eyes and took a moment to tune into the chosen sense. Once we started the tour I did not speak but walked randomly through the markets. Hmmm….Would you like to see some photos from my last trip to Maldives? I just got back a few weeks ago after two months of visiting family, friends and doing some work. I haven't been back since 2019. I stayed in Male’ City.Lucky you get to escape away to a place like that on your holidays!I didn’t go on a holiday…. Through photography, graphic design, fabric printing, soft sculptures, sound and furniture I create a space for visitors to navigate through conversations such as these. Conversations rooted in assumptions about spaces created for tourism, the privileges of holidaying, freedom to travel for rest and relaxation. Whose IsLand Is It Anyway? is part of an ongoing art and research project that critiques representations of island destinations and colonial mechanisms embedded in the tourism marketing of these spaces. This work highlights the sights hidden from the tourist gaze—the reality of life for those whose land and waters are curated and commercialised for visitors' pleasure. The beach towel displays a repeat pattern from the first housing commission built in the Maldives. It was constructed on land reclaimed from a lagoon near the capital city as part of a population consolidation program. While tourists dream of lying on white sandy beaches during their luxury resort holidays, Maldivians living on small islands aspire to move to the city to access better healthcare and education. Resort spaces are exclusively for paying guests, and every effort is made to ensure they only see what aligns with the fantasy of a tropical island holiday. The sunglasses hanging in front of the towel symbolise self-reflection as much as the tourists’ obscured point of view. The texture and aesthetics of these porous yet solid objects appeal to me. Rocks and corals invoke a sense of stability and grounding - a symbol of home. Yet, rocks and corals are fragile and at the mercy of time, natural elements and human intervention. Two bodies of work are presented in this exhibition: Monuments (2017) and Living Room (2021) &nbsp; Monuments (2017) The purpose of a monument is to celebrate or preserve a part of our history, to commemorate the dead and gone, to hold on to an aspect of our narrative. The Monument (2017) is a series of ‘coral portraits’. It was created to pay homage to a coastal park in my home city Male’ much loved by many of its residents that was destroyed for a massive infrastructure project. Each of the ‘portraits’ depicts a piece of weathered coral collected from that site before it’s destruction. Living Room (2021) While the Monument is a mourning for a loss of public space I once enjoyed, the installation Living Room presents a personal and internal space, and was created specially for this exhibition. It references objects from the living rooms of my childhood homes that were the vessels that carried our memories, stories and relations with friends, family and community. The word for family in Dhivehi language (Maldivian) is Aa-ilaa. Corals and rocks are my visual cue for grounding and home. The first plates I drew mapped my immediate family. I’m making more plates to symbolise the relationships we have with different people. They may be family through blood, or become family over time, regardless of boundaries of culture, gender, status or faith. These used dinner plates are perfect objects to map relationships on – they symbolise sharing, comfort and nourishment, a simple object that connects us with others. This exhibition brings together two series of artworks Kareen created between 2014 and 2020 and invites viewers to switch between tourist and local views of one of the most heavily marketed products in the world – idyllic island holidays. &nbsp;Kareen takes the position of a travel agent keen to share the disjunction between what the tourists see and what locals see. The very mediums and symbols of tourism marketing are used to subvert popular ideas of the pristine, peaceful, island paradise The exhibition takes the form of large street posters, a video, as well as typical souvenir products such as post-cards, tea-towels, scarves and stickers. found while strolling on a beautiful stretch of beach on A.Dh. Dhigurah*, Maldives. The island boasts one of the most beautiful and longest beaches in the South Ari Atoll (Ari Atolhu Dhekunu - A.Dh.), and the community takes pride in regular beach clean-ups.&nbsp; Despite the efforts of the community, the beaches are never free from random man-made objects. Scattered among the pieces of dead corals, sea weed and sea shells, a litter of bottles, plastic, sandals, and even pieces of fruit are jarring evidence of human ignorance, complacency and consumerism. Although signifying destruction and decay, I find these objects strangely beautiful and fascinating. They carry stories about human connection, to one another and to our environment; they tell us about design and technology, and about the forces of nature. A simple walk on the beach has now become an uncomfortable confrontation of human impact on nature. In places like the Maldives - heavily reliant on the tourism industry - these objects tell an even more complex story of a population's struggle to find a balance between the economic system and its impact on the environment. Should we try to be better humans? Or should we embrace cast-offs from human lives as part of our evolution into nature? I can’t help but wonder what type of beaches future generations will walk upon.&nbsp; *A.Dh.Dhigurah is located inside the South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Zone. A hot-spot for whale shark excursions and only a few kilometres from a popular tourist resort, the ocean around Dhigurah gets plenty of sea traffic. Despite the community's efforts, the beaches are never free of rubbish. A phenomenon, unfortunately only too common all over the world.
